Product Spotlight: Danish Oil

After using our Water Based Wood Dye many customers ask us what they should use to finish their project.  They are looking for something that will add protection without distorting the high quality finish of the wood dye.  Our advice varies between each project from Wax Polish, Extra Strong Varnish or one of our finishing oils, depending on the project's surrounding environment.  For a job in a bathroom say, we would recommend our Danish Oil to offer that extra durability and water proof protection. But what exactly is Danish Oil and why would you choose it?  Well, for a start, it has the following benefits:

• It is very easy to apply with a cotton cloth or brush.
• It is quick drying.
• It gives an attracting natural low sheen finish.
• It has a low odour when drying and none when dry,
• It is specially formulated to penetrate deep into all types of timber, nourishing and protecting.
• It does not leave a surface film or varnish, and will not chip, flake, peel or crack.
• It is dirt resistant and will resist stains from wine, beer, tea, coffee, coca-cola, orange juice and food.
• It is naturally water resistant, yet is micro-porous to water vapour allowing the wood to 'breathe'.

Why is it called 'Danish' Oil?

The term seems to have appeared during the second half of the 20th century when Scandinavian furniture began to be exported around the world.  This furniture was protected with an attractive low sheen finish and so the term was born.

Where to Use

Danish Oil can be used on almost any wooden surface, including internal and exterior furniture.  The Danish Oil is naturally water, food and alcohol resistant and is suitable for use with all hardwood and softwood, including exterior teak and oak.

Danish Oil is easy to maintain as well as easy to use.  Re-application of one or two thin coats ever year will keep your wood looking naturally 'fresh'.  Damaged or scratched areas can easily be maintained by reapplication.

Application of Danish Oil

Good preparation of woodwork is essential when applying Danish Oil.  A light / thin coat will dry quickly, but further coats will be required to create a durable, waterproof finish.  It is important that the wood is dry before applying the Danish Oil otherwise the finish may flake or peel away from the surface.

Once your woodwork is prepared, apply the Danish Oil evenly with a good quality paint brush or cloth (it can also be sprayed). Allow two to three hours to dry then lightly rub back before applying another coat. Normally, two coats provide exceptional protection. However, when sealing floors or wood stained with dark colours at least three coats should be applied.
